Pakistan’s talented opening batter, Saim Ayub, has been sidelined for the rest of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town following a right ankle injury sustained on the opening day.
The injury happened during the seventh over when Ayub twisted his ankle while fielding. He was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for X-rays and an MRI. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has forwarded the medical reports to specialists in London for further assessment to decide on the best course of treatment and estimate how long he will be out of action.

Ayub’s injury is a major blow for Pakistan, particularly given his exceptional recent form. He was named Player of the Series in Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI sweep against South Africa last month, where he scored two centuries in three games. His absence is especially worrying with the ICC Champions Trophy, set to be hosted by Pakistan, just around the corner in February. This injury has raised significant concerns about his availability for the tournament.
Teammate Salman Agha spoke about Ayub’s injury, saying, “It’s a huge setback given the form he’s in. He would have been a valuable player on this wicket. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets better soon.”
While awaiting further medical advice from specialists in London, the PCB is expected to share updates on Ayub’s condition and his recovery timeline. Fans and the cricketing community are hopeful for a quick recovery, recognizing his vital role in Pakistan’s batting lineup.
